{"id":718,"date":"2026-03-01T15:51:50","date_gmt":"2026-03-01T15:51:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csnorris.com\/magus\/?p=718"},"modified":"2026-03-01T16:20:19","modified_gmt":"2026-03-01T16:20:19","slug":"tales-of-the-iron-mistress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/csnorris.com\/magus\/?p=718","title":{"rendered":"Tales of the Iron Mistress"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We see a lot of pastiches and homages to the various supporting characters in Dracula and their imagined descendants.<sup><a href=\"#fn1\" data-type=\"internal\" data-id=\"#fn1\">1<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp; Except for one:&nbsp; Quincy Morris.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which is kind of odd, seeing as Quincy delivers one of the killing blows to the Count, the one to the heart, with his Bowie knife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But wait &#8211; aren&#8217;t vampires immune to mundane weapons?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, yes, of course.&nbsp; But who says Quincy&#8217;s knife was mundane?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if it was, in fact, the fabled knife of James Bowie himself, supposedly lost after the siege of the Alamo?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it was, in fact, the legendary Iron Mistress, then it was made of literal star-stuff, meteoric iron that came from the fathomless depths of outer space.&nbsp; Or perhaps beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What better to slay an otherworldly monster than an otherworldly weapon?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, Quincy dies from wounds sustained in the fight against the vampire, and nothing more is said, in the story, about the knife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we can speculate that, as was often customary in such circumstances, particularly for a minor hero, Quincy&#8217;s possessions were returned to his family in Texas.&nbsp; There, perhaps, the knife occupied an honored place on a wall of similar memories, and waited, down through the generations, before being sold off like so much clutter, in an estate sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until some hapless nebbish buys it at a yard sale and (through events and circumstances yet to be written) finds that it is so much more than a mere priceless antique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"fn1\">1 <em>As far as we know from the text, Quincy had no children.
